syncing
Today I have been playing with syncing over the air. After switching to a pocketpc from a palm I had not been able to create a decent sync solution.
I always use a backup program for a pda. I used nvbackup for the different palms (a free program that you can find here). For the pocketpc I could not find a decent freeware program, so I forked out to buy spb backup from Spb Backup - Products - Spb Software House a good and decent program that you can schedule. The only thing I would say that is missing from this program is the ability to ftp the backup to a server. It is one of the things I really liked about nvbackup. Oh well. Keep an eye out on spb. They make nice software. Currently I have the backup, the pocket plus and the spb diary software from them.
So, back to syncing. I wanted something easy, low maintenance and free. This is an excellent article/guide/howto on how to get a lot of different syncing done. another very good program to look at is GooSync Beta Home Page. It's a beta version and it's free. Currently it can only do calendar syncing but according to the website they are working on syncing contacts too.
I have a problem with projects like goosync. It's run by Toffa. I have nothing against Toffa but there is no statement whatsoever telling you it will stay free or what you are going to pay once it is not beta anymore. The sync client you get from goosync is a dressed down synthesis one. It works quite well. The error messages are quite cryptic but google is your friend.
At the end of the evening I had an account at scheduleworld (it's free), set up syncevolution to have evolution talk to scheduleworld and had my pocketpc talking to scheduleworld using a trial from the complete synthesis client. Read this: groupware advice - Ubuntu Forums for information on how to set syncevolution up. I had to compile the sources on ubuntu because it was linked against the wrong libcamel. But apart from that it works fine.
So currently I have only one issue. The categories seem to get lost between evolution, scheduleworld and the pocketpc. I will have to investigate that. Todo now: See if I can achieve the same results with a funambol server running here. Obviously the connection to google calendar will have to be written by me. But that is not too much of a problem. Also I would love to see if I can replace at least the contact db from funambol with an ldap server.
